Our instructors leverage advanced techniques derived from flight test and aerial tactics development to provide flight debriefs of the highest possible quality. To do this, we use a data-centric approach, which takes advantage of internal and external video recording and telemetry data to accurately recreate the performance of both pilot and aircraft.
To further mitigate risk in mountain flying training, prospective clients must meet the following prerequisites:
Typically, clients bring their own aircraft to New Mexico for these courses.
Candidate aircraft must meet the following prerequisites:
Our basic Mountain Flying course is 3 days long, includes a 4th weather back-up day, and is conducted entirely in New Mexico. While the terrain in New Mexico is certainly more challenging than that found in non-mountain states, it is slightly lower in elevation than that found in our neighbor to the North. This makes New Mexico the ideal training ground for new mountain pilots.
Clients will gain an appreciation for wind in the mountains and learn the proper techniques for mixture leaning, pass & ridge crossings, and canyon escape turns. They will also get extensive short field take-off and landing practice at high-density altitudes.
Clients should plan to travel the day prior to course start and the day after course completion. Also, consider allowing an extra day for wind, weather, or maintenance.
The price for the basic course is $3,640 and includes all books and reference materials.
The Advanced Mountain Flying course is 4-days long (with a 5th weather back-up day). In the advanced course, we will take the skills learned in the basic course and refine them to prepare you for more challenging situations. These include narrower passes, shorter/narrower runways, higher terrain and higher density altitudes.
The advanced course begins in New Mexico but then moves into Arizona and/or Colorado. This course should also appeal to those interested in practicing their backcountry camping skills, as it includes an overnight at a fly-in destination. Location will vary by weather and season.
Clients should plan to travel the day prior to course start and the day after course completion. Also, consider allowing an extra day for wind, weather, or maintenance.
The price for the advanced course is $4,550 and includes all books, reference materials, and s'mores supplies. We offer a 10% discount for clients who elect to book the basic and advanced courses back-to-back.
We invite graduates of our advanced course to return for a review of mountain flying principles and techniques. This 2-day course includes 4 hours of classroom instruction, 4 hours of flight instruction reviewing mountain flying skills, and up to 8 additional hours of flight instruction in the mountains of New Mexico. The price for the refresher course is $1,820.
Formation flying is challenging, fun, and can further mitigate risk in the backcountry. A wingman provides mutual support en-route, a ready back-up airplane if lead is unable to depart an intermediate stop, and needed assistance in the unfortunate event of an incident or accident.
We can arrange a second aircraft to support solo clients or add a second CFI for paired clients who each bring their own plane. The formation option will add an additional day to cover formation fundamentals before clients proceed, in formation, through the standard advanced course syllabus.
For paired clients, the price for this option is an additional $950 per client. In the event a second aircraft is required, additional aircraft rental charges will apply. Solo clients desiring formation training should call to discuss pricing.
For those pilots based in the Western US who are looking to "kill two birds with one stone," we can come to you. We'll provide the classroom instruction in the location of your choice, then accompany you on a flight(s) to Albuquerque to continue the training. As we transit mountainous terrain enroute, we will get a head start on completing the skills development portion of the course. Depending on your location, this option could potentially reduce the total course length by up to a day by combining training and transit. Call for pricing.
Do you have a particular destination or mountain flying challenge in mind? Interested in training somewhere other than New Mexico? Call us and we can discuss your training goals and build a training plan that fits your needs.
To secure their spot on the schedule, clients are required to submit a $1,000 non-refundable deposit. In the event of cancellation due to winds, weather, maintenance or other uncontrollable circumstance, we will gladly re-schedule your course for another time.
When you're ready to book, give us a call to coordinate payment of the deposit.
Clients who book Basic and Advanced courses back-to-back will receive a 10% discount.
In recognition of their service to our nation, we proudly offer a 10% discount to our active-duty and retired military clients.
